To determine whether a scientist is already in the original DSB (or supplements), consult our suggestion page (www.indiana.edu/~newdsb/sug.html), where you can browse alphabetically or by broad scientific disciplines.
Basic biographical data:
*For Nobel Laureates, go to http://nobelprize.org/
Enter the laureate's name in the search box in the lower right corner of the home page.
*Wilson Web's Current Biography Illustrated is described at www.hwwilson.com/Databases/cbillus.htm. Your library may have a subscription. At IU go to http://vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com/hww/shared/shared_main.jhtml;jsessionid=4XO0SDU34SJHFQA3DIMSFGGADUNGIIV0?_requestid=39754
*Biography Resource Center is described at www.gale.com/pdf/facts/brc2.pdf. It combines various biography reference works published by Thomson Gale. One can do an advanced search on various fields including death dates and occupation. Scientists seem to be classified as "professor" or "author". The search results list sometimes further specifies discipline. The site offers "thumbnail" biographies and links to articles in reference works. Again a subscription is needed. At IU go to: www.galenet.com/servlet/BioRC?authRedir=true
*Consult major newspapers for obituaries. ProQuest Historial Newspapers described at http://proquest.umi.com/login includes the historical New York Times, with searchable images of the entire run back to 1851 (IU's version does not include 2002-2004). Enter a scientist's name. Note that the advanced search option includes searching for document type "obituary", but that will not actually find all obituaries: for instance, Linus Pauling's death was a front-page story, not an obituary.
From IU: From Library Find Information, uses Search All to find "NYT" (a librarian told me this was the best way to find it).
*Times Digital Archive (The Times, London) 1785-1985, described at http://www.galegroup.com/Times/, offers searchable images.
From IU: Search among the databases listed under Library Find Information.
* The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (GB) is available online by subscription. It is described at http://www.oup.com/oxforddnb/info/ . At IU's library go to: http://www.oxforddnb.com/subscribed/
References to descriptions of the Scientist's work
*For articles (including obituaries) from many news sources, consult Lexis/Nexis Academic, which covers the most recent two years. Publisher's site: http://web.lexis-nexis.com/universe/ From IU: Under Library Find Information, Top 10 Resources, choose Lexis/Nexis.
*For a science studies bibliography by or about a person,
RLG's Eureka History of Science, Technology, and Medicine database combines the Isis Current Bibliography and 3 others, and covers 1975 to the present. It is accessible from the HSS website: enter at www.hssonline.org/ then find the database under Teaching and Research; then enter the username and password published in the HSS Newsletter. From IU: http://eureka.rlg.org/Eureka/zgate2.prod
*ISI's Web of Science includes the Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index, since 1977. Publisher's site: http://isi02.isiknowledge.com/portal.cgi then click Web of Science.
Under General Search, the Author field will find citations to items by a scientist (check different possibilities for initials). Note: to find citations to pieces about a scientist, put the scientist's name in the Topic field (not Author).
From IU: Under Library Find Information, Top 10 Resources, choose Web of Knowledge, then click Web of Science.
