Geographic Focus

This project provides not only a statewide description of the nonprofit sector but also a more in-depth study of 12 diverse communities. These communities were selected on the basis of four major considerations:

  1. Diversity of size (from large metropolitan area to small rural county);
  2. Diversity of local characteristics (racial composition, wealth, growth/decline, industry base);
  3. State-wide geographic distribution; and
  4. Access to field associates and community support
Metropolitan areas
  Bloomington
  Evansville
  Fort Wayne
  Northwest Indiana
  Indianapolis
  Muncie
  South Bend
Non-metro counties
  Bartholomew
  Cass
  Dubois
  Miami
  Scott

Note: The following map shows the location of participating communities. Click communities on the map to see the basic information on the number of nonprofit organizations per 10,000 county residents based on our analysis of all available sources of nonprofit listings, including supplementary in local communities (except for Bloomington), and our personal affiliation survey.

Not every phase of the project concerns every community in Indiana. Here is the break down of what we are examining, when, and through what methods:
