Abstracts
Abstracts and summaries of online reports, publications, and academic
papers from the Indiana Nonprofit Sector Project. Topics include the characteristics
and challenges of Indiana nonprofits, nonprofit employment, volunteering
and individual engagement with nonprofits, and analysis of nonprofit databases
and community variations in the density of nonprofits. A summary listing is available here.
Indiana Nonprofit Surveys
We are currently conducting a Nonprofit
Capacity Assessment survey of Indiana arts and culture organizations at the request of the Indiana Arts Commission. The survey is based on a similar one conducted for the Indiana Grantmakers
Alliance and Lumina Foundation for Education in 2007. Both of these efforts are designed to help Indiana policy and grantmakers
develop grant opportunities and other support structures that effectively meet the needs of Indiana
nonprofits for capacity building and technical assistance.
Our 2002
Indiana Nonprofit Survey of 2,206 Indiana nonprofits is now completed.
A series of statewide survey reports have analyzed Indiana's faith-based
nonprofits, membership organizations, how the state's nonprofits relate
to other organizations, manage their financial and human resources, are
impacted by community and policy changes, and what their comprehensive
profile is. We
have also completed twelve regional reports based on the survey,
profiling the nonprofit sector in selected communities across the state.
For more information about these regions, see community
profiles.
Indiana
Nonprofit Employment
Our third report updates our statewide
analysis of the size, composition, and distribution of paid employment
in the private nonprofit sector in Indiana for 2001 through 2005. Our
analysis compares trends in nonprofit, for-profit, and government employment
and wages over that period and analyzes industry and regional differences
in nonprofit employment. We have also completed several regional
reports profiling nonprofit employment in selected economic regions
across the state, including the Bloomington,
Northwest Indiana,
Muncie and Evansville economic
regions. Future reports will update the statewide analysis to include
the most recent information as well as analysis of historical changes
in nonprofit employment in Indiana.
Nonprofit Trust and Personal
Affiliation Surveys
We have conducted two surveys of Indiana residents. Most recently we have examined the extent to which they trust nonprofits more or less than other key institutions (October 2008). Several years ago we examined their personal affiliation with nonprofits (May 2001). The
results and key findings of the two surveys are posted here.
Comprehensive
Searchable Nonprofit Database
We have updated our comprehensive, searchable database of Indiana nonprofits
using 2005 listings available from the Internal Revenue Service (tax exempt
entities with Indiana reporting addresses), the Indiana Secretary of State
(entities incorporated as nonprofits in the state of Indiana), and the
yellow pages (religious congregations in Indiana).
