Abstract

Drawing on a large survey (n=2,206) of nonprofit organizations, we use multivariate analysis to explore several models for assessing the relative importance of environmental uncertainty, transaction cost economics, resource dependency, and institutional forces on nonprofit collaborative activities. We address four key questions: (1) how extensive is involvement in collaborations or networks among nonprofits? (2) What forms do these IORs take? (3) What accounts for variations in these dimensions? And (4) what impact do the structure of IORs (formality, size, scope) have on the ability of nonprofits to deliver needed services and to secure their own organizational capacities? We conclude with a summary of our findings and their implications for policy and future research.
