Paper presented at the annual meetings of ARNOVA, Chicago, IL, November 16-18, 2006

Abstract

We examine the extent to which capacity resources, the concrete organizational structures or institutionalized processes that increase organizational capacity, is [ARE] related to the community contexts in which nonprofits operate. We combine data from a survey of Indiana nonprofits with demographic and other community-level data to determine whether community-level factors affect the capacity resources of nonprofit organizations, as measured by the presence of 16 specific organizational components. We first test whether there is any statistical evidence that community-level factors help explain differences in nonprofit capacity. We then investigate which community-level factors are consistent with observed community-level differences in nonprofit capacity. We find that the pattern of educational attainment across the 14 regions studied parallels the pattern of average capacity resources, but that these patterns are primarily driven by access to information technology. No other regional characteristic does so with such consistency.
