MLK Day
Mary Frances Berry, chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, will speak at Whittenberger Auditorium Monday evening in Bloomington, and Minnijean Brown-Trickey, one of the "Little Rock (Ark.) Nine" that integrated Central High School in 1957, will attend the 32nd annual IUPUI King Dinner Monday. Read about other observances of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on IU's eight campuses.

Dee and Davis
They were close friends of Martin Luther King Jr., served as masters of ceremonies for the historic 1963 March on Washington and once risked their careers resisting McCarthyism. While younger generations may know them best from their roles in Spike Lee movies, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis have acting careers and a marriage that span more than a half-century. The couple was on the Bloomington campus this week for the dedication of the new Theatre/Drama and Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center. In a conversation with John McCluskey, an IUB professor of English and Afro-American studies, the two offer a retrospective on their careers and their quest for social justice. A winter commencement calls for a special flourish from well-wishers, and when HPER major Patrick Pierce of Wilmette, Ill., looked into the crowd at IU Bloomington's Assembly Hall Dec. 15, to his wondering eyes did appear a group of Rudolph-nosed friends and family (above). Pierce (not pictured here) had barely enough time to hang his new IU diploma before taking off for employment at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

War correspondent as teacher

Taking instruction from someone who has literally been in the trenches brings immediacy to aspiring journalists. Sherry Ricchiardi, who covered the Balkan wars and now commutes from her home in Washington, D.C., to teach at IUPUI, also assesses the stress and emotional toll on reporters covering acts of war and terrorism. This summer, she'll take a group of journalism students "on assignment" to former battle zones in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
