Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft—comparing antidepressants

Three of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants are similar in effectiveness for depressive symptoms, according to a new study by the IU School of Medicine and the Regenstrief Institute for Healthcare at IU. The antidepressants are paroxetime (sold under the name of Paxil), fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertaline (Zoloft). The study is the first to compare the relative effectiveness of the three drugs, the most commonly prescribed class of antidepressants in the country. Members of a class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, they have similar effects on health-related quality of life measures, including social interactions, ability to work, sexual functioning and sleep.
