Playing Carnegie Hall

IU’s Children’s Chamber Choir in Bloomington has been invited to make its debut performance in the 2002 National Choral Festival on March 23 at New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall. Directed by Kevin Skelton, a graduate student studying singing with Alan Bennett and conducting with John Poole, the Chamber Choir is one of eight choirs selected to perform by Field Studies International.

The advanced ensemble of 32 children, aged 11 to 14, was chosen to sing at the festival as a result of its outstanding performance last year at the National Kodály Convention in Williamsburg, Va. In addition to performing with the seven other participating choirs, the choir has been selected, on the basis of an audition tape, to be the featured choir in the program. This honor allows the group to sing several pieces from its own repertoire preceding the massed choir selections.

Now in its 21st year, the IU Children’s Choir program encompasses six different choirs. Ruth Boshkoff, a nationally recognized composer and music educator, is the IU Children’s Choir director.
