Historian Kathleen McCarthy of City University of New York will speak Thursday (Feb.5) at 4 p.m. in the Coronation Room of the Indiana Memorial Union, Bloomington.
Her topic will be her most recent book, American Creed: Philanthropy and the Rise of Civil Society, 1700-1865 (University of Chicago, 2003). In her research, McCarthy looked at the rise of civil society in this period, paying particular attention to the roles of African Americans and women.
