In this 1954 photograph, Cleathal Fox, the IU administration’s
switchboard operator, is pictured at her workstation, which,
a half century later, reflects little evidence of current communication
tools used in the academy for the data, video and voice communication
infrastructure required. The Telecommunications Division of
University Information Technology Services provides the physical
computing and telephone networks that serve the E-mail, messaging
and telephone needs of university faculty, staff and students.
One can only speculate on what Mrs. Fox might have seen ahead
for university communications: after all, in 1954, fraternity
boys were still stuffing the now-defunct telephone booth. Could
she have imaged the John-e-Box?
