| In honor of its founders, its historical
legacy, outstanding students from its Bloomington campus and 18 award-winning
teachers university wide, Indiana University will celebrate Founders
Day March 3, at 1 p.m. in Bloomington’s Assembly Hall with IU President
Myles Brand presiding.
As is tradition, the ceremony will recall IU's founders, who in
1816, while drafting the first Indiana state constitution, called
"for a general system of education, ascending in a regular
gradation from township school to a state university." The
Indiana State Seminary, established in 1820, became today’s IU through
the visionary work of its presidents—Andrew Wylie, David Starr Jordan,
William Lowe Bryan and Herman B Wells.
IU educators and students share the honors on Founders Day as well.
Fourteen professors, three associate instructors and a part-time instructor from the faculties at Bloomington, Indianapolis, South Bend and Fort Wayne will be recognized for excellence in teaching, research or service.
IU Bloomington students achievements will also be honored.
