Unsafe sleeping practices threaten infant safety

According to Dr. Deborah Givan, a professor of pediatric pulmonology at the IU School of Medicine and medical director of the Riley Hospital for Children Sleep Laboratory at IUPUI, sleeping positions and where an infant sleeps is critical to his or her safety a professor of pediatric pulmonology. Her research is no small contribution to child safety. According to Marion County Coroner Dr. John McGoff, infant deaths due to unsafe sleeping practices are at “epidemic proportions in the Indianapolis area.” Unsafe sleeping conditions for infants include babies “co-sleeping” with parents; having a child sleep with soft bedding or stuffed animals in the crib; placing a baby on a waterbed or bean bag chair; using infant sleeping bags made from non-porous materials; and placing the child on adult beds, couches, chairs or other non-firm surfaces. It is suggested that infants should sleep on their backs in a crib that is sturdy and well maintained.
