Indiana Council for Continuing Education Student of the Year Syndee Gail Knight (left); Faculty Member of the Year, Al Wertheim
| The Indiana Council for Continuing Education has named Al Wertheim, professor of English, theater and speech at IU Bloomington, its 2002 Faculty Member of the Year, and Syndee Gail Knight its Student of the Year.
The ICCE awards program recognizes outstanding contributions by staff in continuing education programs as well as outstanding adult students.
Wertheim was selected for his innovative “mobile classroom” session en route to the Indiana Repertory Theater in Indianapolis for a class offered by the Bloomington Division of Continuing Studies at IU. Wertheim sets the stage by introducing the day’s performance, and on the way back to Bloomington, fields questions and leads discussion of the day’s production. Due to the course’s continuing popularity, the mobile classroom now goes to the Actor’s Theater in Louisville as well.
Wertheim also was cited for his work with the IUB Mini University, in which his courses are perennial favorites.
Knight is a first-generation college student who began her studies at IU as an older student. She has earned both an associate’s degree and bachelor’s degree in general studies, was selected as a Chancellor’s Scholar and plans to pursue graduate studies in sociology.
Wertheim and Knight will be honored March 1 at the ICCE’s annual conference.
