Learn about service learning March 2 at IUB

Nine IU faculty and Kennesaw State’s Siegel to speak

By Jayne Spencer

Indiana University faculty, staff, students and others involved in service learning initiatives are invited to attend the inaugural Conference on the Scholarship of Engagement and Service-Learning March 2 at the Indiana Memorial Union on the Bloomington campus.

Betty Siegel, president of Georgia’s Kennesaw State University, will speak on “The Effects of Service on an Intellectual Community” in a 9 a.m. keynote address at Whittenberger Auditorium. Check in begins at 8:30 a.m. on site and the conference concludes at 2:30 p.m.

Siegel is responsible for leading a collaborative, interdisciplinary effort to see that KSU evolved into an active participant in addressing the issues facing the northwest crescent of Georgia in terms of the economy, quality of life and infrastructure, as well as cultural and educational concerns. Following a “Year of Honoring Service,” the campus moved in to a “Collaboration 2000” mode, bringing together “people, places, policies, processes and programs” to contribute to the greater community, of which KSU has become an ever increasing vital component.

The KSU initiative has spawned, among other things, the Center for Nonprofit and Public Leaders, the Alliance for Community Engagement, the CAREing Center, an organization of retired educators and executives who bring their experience in service to the public education program, and the Northwest Crescent Project, a collaboration among community, government and educational leaders of counties throughout the crescent area of Georgia.

The conference is being hosted by Community Outreach and Partnerships in Service-Learning (COPSL), headquartered at IUB, and co-sponsored by the IU Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs; Instructional Support Services and the Center for Postsecondary Research and Planning.
