Fostering young scientists

IU Northwest hosted a “Brain Bee” earlier this month, as well as a regional tournament of the annual Science Olympiad. Such events allow campuses to showcase their institutional identities to youngsters likely to be college-bound. The Indiana State Olympiad is scheduled March 19 on the Bloomington campus, and volunteers are being recruited for the Saturday event.

That’s show business

Meet IU Auditorium director Doug Booher. He’s credited for boosting private funding and holding ticket prices down, prompting students and community patrons to cheer. He’s also grooming the next generation of arts managers through SPEA’s arts administration program. And if Booher isn’t busy enough, the auditorium’s biggest Broadway production of the season, Les Miserables, arrives in Bloomington March 9 for a five-day run.

From the schoolhouse to the Statehouse

Hoosiers for Higher Education brought its message to Indiana’s Capitol Feb. 8. During the visit, two veteran state legislators were honored: Vernon Smith (D-Gary) and Bob Meeks (R-LaGrange).

Viewpoint: Engaging students politically

Last fall’s U.S. elections produced the best turnout in a decade among voters 18 to 29. Still, James Perry, director of IU’s American Democracy Project, says universities can – and should – do more to “transmit the values of democracy and citizenship.”
