Few people have had as large an impact on the field of nursing
as Brenda Lyon, an authority on the science and clinical management
of stress and coping, and a national expert in nursing science and
practice.
Thanks to Lyon's leadership, the Master of Science in Nursing
Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist Program garnered a top ranking
by U.S. News & World Report in fall 2000.
In addition to bringing such national recognition to IU's nursing
school, she is credited with shaping the curriculum and creating
the "Teacher-Preceptor-Partnership" model, in which nurses
in the field are trained to work with faculty members in the instruction
and evaluation of students. She has stayed tuned to the needs of
faculty through her presidency of the Corridor Council of Nursing
Faculty and its Learning Environment Steering Committee (LENS).
Beyond campus, Lyon's work includes charter membership in the
Nursing Practice and Education Consortium, which is developing a
strategic action plan for the reformation of U.S. nursing care systems.
A member of the American Academy of Nursing, Lyon has founded four
state and national nursing organizations, and in her role as chairperson
of the legislative committee for the Indiana State Nurses'
Association, she worked with legislators and lobbyists to bring
into law an updated definition of professional nursing practice
in Indiana. She also founded the Consortium of Indiana Nursing Organizations,
which successfully lobbied the Indiana General Assembly to pass
mandatory licensure for nursing.
Lyon's 1995 video and monograph, "Conquering Stress in
Changing Times," produced by GlaxoWellcome, have been used
by hospitals across the country to help staff cope with the stress
of health care. They have received national awards including one
from the American Academy of Nursing and the CINE Golden Eagle Award,
given by the U.S. Council of International Non-theatrical Events.
