| According to Dr. Elizabeth Bowman, psychiatrist and clinical professor in the Department of Neurology in IU’s School of Medicine on the Indianapolis campus, several U.S. studies suggest that people who are grounded spiritually have an advantage in staying healthy or halting the progression of serious illness. She cited one particular study which showed that people with frequent worship attendance are at lower risk of developing cardiovascular and artery diseases than those who rarely or do not attend services. Bowman, speaking at IU’s Spring Mini Medical School, also indicated that while evidence is growing that faith and spirituality are paramount patient concerns, many health-care professionals—particularly psychiatrists and psychologists—have been slow to come around that notion.
