| Shirley Ann Jackson, president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, will be presenting two Patten Lectures on the Bloomington campus. Jackson is possibly best known for her work on polaronic aspects of electrons in two-dimensional systems, and continues her work in theoretical physics, focusing on theoretical condensed matter physics, especially layered systems, and the physics of opto-electronic materials.
Jackson’s accomplishments include being the first African-American woman to receive a doctorate in any subject from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the first African-American woman to be elected to the National Academy of Engineering. In 2004, she was named one of seven fellows of the Association for Women in Science, which is dedicated to achieving equity and full participation of women in all fields of science and technology.
