Some languages, just as some species, are endangered by rapid growth. And while road construction may lead to the demise of a local ecosystem, modernity and its inherent growth threaten rare tongues; that highway known as the Internet may be a major culprit. Researchers speculate that 90 percent of the world’s languages will be extinct within the next century. Daniel Comiskey’s story on world languages, in the current edition of Indiana Alumni Magazine, was featured in the Etc. column of the Christian Science Monitor March 29.
