Whether you served as a "extra" in the making of the film that immortalized IUB’s Little 500 or you are simply nostalgic about the campus and community backdrop from which the ‘Cutters’ bike team sprung, come see some film clips.
| A 25th anniversary reception of the movie Breaking Away is planned at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 23, at the soccer practice field adjacent to Armstrong Stadium on the IU Bloomington campus, in conjunction with the IUB campus’ Little 500, often called "the world’s greatest college weekend."
Anyone who was in the movie is encouraged to come. Memorabilia from the 1979 movie starring Dennis Quaid and Daniel Stern will be on display and film clips will be shown. The legacy of the "Cutters" lives on in the form of an independent men's team that will compete again this year.
Five years ago, stars Dennis Christopher and Robyn Douglas came back to Bloomington for a 20th-year reunion but this year’s focus will be on a recognition of the community’s role in the film production.
Little 500 race activities began on March 26 with qualifications, and lead up to the women's and men's bicycle races on April 23-24. Now in its 17th year, the women's Little 500 will begin at at 4 p.m. CDT on Friday, April 23. On Saturday, April 24, at 2 p.m. CDT, the men will have their turn. Shaun Micheel, an IU alumnus and golfer who won the PGA Championship, will be the grand marshal. Former professional cyclist Jonathan Vaughters will be the race starter. The races at Armstrong Stadium will be presented in high-definition television by HDNet. Other Little 500 events include the Little Fifty Running Race on Sunday, April 18.
