| When Chancellor Bruce Bergland stepped into his new position at Indiana University Northwest almost two years ago, work toward the campus’ “Shared Vision” immediately went into full swing. After naming a steering committee, Bergland requested the group complete four tasks by May 1 of this year.
The tasks included preparation of (1) A statement of “Shared Vision” for Indiana University Northwest, (2) A statement of strategic areas of focus for the institution, (3) A statement of institutional outcomes, and (4) A statement of action plans for both the 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 school years. The chancellor’s full request was brought to him by the steering committee in report form on May 1.
Since that time, IU Northwest’s institutional outcomes of “Unique Identity” and “Campus Climate” were created, and eight task forces were formed to represent the action plans for the outcomes. After hosting town hall meetings on campus and in the seven counties IU Northwest serves, the implementation of the action plans began. More than 250 individuals from the campus and community have been involved, many of whom are a part of nine task forces and other committees.
“We are accomplishing many things, but we still have a great deal to do,” said Bergland. “However, our institution is energized and committed to this pursuit.”
As a record of accomplishment, the Shared Vision Quarterly Report was recently released. Some of the achievements by the task forces include a definition of the two areas of excellence for which the university will be known: “Sustainable Regional Vitality” and “Cultural Discovery and Learning.”
The Externally Funded Research and Externally Funded Service Projects task forces are working together and are focusing on the enhancement of the region’s health and well-being. The task force is currently seeking proposals for the project or projects.
