| Twenty-three IU faculty members have been selected to receive the 2005 Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching (FACET) award.
The 23 join a distinguished group of IU faculty chosen annually since FACET's inception in 1989. FACET's current membership is 446.
FACET awards are presented to faculty who have demonstrated their exceptional commitment to teaching and learning through areas of self-evaluation, course preparation, research, instructional skills and student impact.
The new FACET members, along with the 2005 recipient of the P.A. Mack Award for Distinguished Service to Teaching, were honored May 20-22 at the 17th annual FACET Retreat at Potawatomi Inn Resort and Conference Center near Lake James in Pokagon State Park in Angola.
This year's Mack Award winner is IU anthropologist Anya Peterson Royce, author of Anthropology of the Performing Arts: Artistry, Virtuosity, and Interpretation in Cross-Cultural Perspective (AltaMira Press, 2004).
In the book, Royce turned her anthropological gaze on the performing arts, attempting to find broad commonalities in performance, art and artists across space, time and culture. She asked general questions as to the nature of artistic interpretation, the differences between virtuosity and artistry, and how artists interplay with audience, aesthetics and style. To support her case, she examined artists as diverse as Fokine and the Ballets Russes, Tewa Indian dancers, 17th-century commedia dell'arte, Japanese kabuki and butoh, Zapotec shamans and the mime of Marcel Marceau, adding her own observations as a professional dancer in the classical ballet tradition.
