| The IU School of Music’s annual Summer Music Festival in Bloomington will bring notable IU alumni Joshua Bell and Angela Brown to campus, and performances by soprano Elizabeth Futral (July 17) and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, whose musical and artistic director is IU Distinguished Professor David Baker (Aug. 5), as well as a free lecture and recital featuring composer Ned Rorem (July 26, Auer Concert Hall, lecture at 2:30 p.m.; recital at 7 p.m.)

Symphonic Series: Three performances are scheduled by the Festival Orchestra. The special combination of IU students and their musical mentors, performing under the leadership of acclaimed guest conductors Jaime Laredo (July 3), Erich Kunzel (July 24) and Anne Manson (Aug. 7) will make for exciting summer concerts. Also included in the series is a performance by the Symphony Orchestra with guest conductor Clifford Colnot (free, July 15).
Band Series (free!):Audiences can enjoy Bloomington’s tranquil summer evenings at the outdoor band concerts, which feature programs of marches, popular favorites, solos and light classics. Stephen Pratt (July 9, July 23) and Douglas Stotter and David Woodley (July 16) will conduct the concerts in Jacobs Plaza.
Opera Theatre:Lucy Simon’s The Secret Garden is based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It’s a great introduction to opera for children and a treat for all ages (July 12, 18, 19).
Don Pasquale, Gaetano Donizetti’s 43rd opera, opened to enthusiastic audiences on Jan. 3, 1843. Soon after its premiere, this Italian opera buffa became an international success and has never left the operatic repertory (Aug. 1,2,8,9).
Chamber Music Series:Faculty and guest artists perform in a more intimate setting in this series. Audiences will hear cellist Gary Hoffman and pianist Frederic Chiu (July 1), a violin recital by Dylana Jenson featuring Brian Ganz on piano (July 16, free) and a group of performers from the Steans Institute for Young Artists (July 14). Likewise, the Penderecki Quartet (July 8, July 10) Beaux Arts Trio (July 22) and Sagee Trio (June 29, July 6) will return to perform concerts as well.
Benefit Concert Series: This new and notable addition to the Summer Music Festival will present violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Simon Mulligan (June 24) in a concert to support the Alan P. Bell Memorial Scholarship Fund. Soprano Angela Brown, baritone Timothy Noble and pianist Charles Webb, a dean emeritus of the School of Music, will join together in concert to support the Kenda Webb Memorial Scholarship Fund (Aug. 6).
