And these parents thought their "first day of
class" experiences were long in the past! Here, parents form
a line to enter an information session at the IU Auditorium during
freshman orientation sessions this summer on the Bloomington campus.

Once inside, they would be introduced to the "Indiana
Promise," which their favorite college students will be asked
to make during IUs Freshman Induction Ceremony, scheduled
this year for Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 4:30 p.m. at Assembly Hall.
IU Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Brehm added the pledge to the ceremony
in 2002 as a way for students to acknowledge the importance of their
own active participation in the Indiana University experience.
The promise, which is made by each student to IU as well as to
him or herself, reads:
I promise that:
I will be ethical in my academic work.
I will take personal responsibility for what I say and
what I do.
I will respect the dignity of others, treating them with
civility and understanding.
The Freshman Induction Ceremony kicks off several days of activities
designed to introduce new students to their peers and a myriad of
activities awaiting them, including CultureFest, a festival emphasizing
cultural diversity and understanding, on Thursday, Aug. 28.
