The Neanderthals were the first to see what you may be observing
in the 2003 late summer evening sky. And whether you’ve observed
Mars with the naked eye, a homemade telescope or plan to visit a
local observatory to see the closest approach of the planets Earth
and Mars on Aug. 27, you will enjoy this NASA site titled "Mars:
The Red Planet." Two six-wheeled exploration rovers are scheduled
to land on Mars in two different spots in January. The mission will
be to search for evidence of water or a history of water on the
planet. Read, too, about Earth time opposed to Martian time, and
enjoy the amazing graphics. The picture above is of BEES (Bio-inspired
Engineering of Explorations Systems), a Mars plane project NASA
has been working on for years. The planes have been designed to
navigate Mars the way insects control their courses on Earth. (See
today’s front-page story, "An eyeful of Mars," for IU observatory
visitor information.)
