| Members of the Indiana University
Bloomington faculty, staff and student body will be welcoming new
and returning students to the campus during "Proud Traditions: Welcome
Week 2001," beginning next Wednesday (Aug. 22). Welcome Week events
are coordinated by the IU Office of Orientation Programs.
The freshman induction ceremony Aug. 22 at 4:30 p.m. at Assembly
Hall and the "Traditions and Spirit of IU" on Friday, Aug. 24, are
both campus highlights that have become Bloomington campus traditions
of Welcome Week.
The induction ceremony, presided over by IU President Myles Brand,
will welcome students into the academic world of IU and a picnic
will follow. "Traditions and Spirit" at 5 p.m. Aug. 24 at Assembly
Hall will offer a "spirited" welcome that will include teaching
the traditional IU fight song to new students and other traditions
found in athletics and other out-of- classroom arenas. This year
there will be some surprises in store for participants.
This year also marks the return of a newer highlight event --
CultureFest. CultureFest 2001, which takes place on Thursday (Aug.
23) at 4:30 p.m., begins in the IU Auditorium, with a brief video
of the history and culture of IU, and featured speaker Kevin Powell.
Powell, a poet, journalist and political activist, has also been
a host for BET television and was on the original cast of MTV's
The Real World. He will present a challenge to the freshman
class regarding culture, diversity and involvement. Following the
speakers, students will take part in an outdoor festival, complete
with food from different cultures, music, interactive games and
much more.
In addition, Welcome Week offers a focus on academics, IU resources
and opportunities for involvement through events such as academic
orientation, resource and campus tours, residence center events,
social events and more.
For additional information on the following activities, contact
the Orientation Programs staff at McNutt Residence Center or call
the Office of Orientation Programs at 812-855-4357.
