IU optometrist studying the aging eye

To the layman, “retinal electrophysiology” sounds like a very complicated subject for research. That’s what Suresh Viswanathan of the School of Optometry considers his primary research interest. The recipient of a $50,000 grant from the American Federation for Aging Research, Viswanathan will set up an ocular electrodiagnostic laboratory.

His grant research will be to identify retinal loci of age-related changes in dark adapted vision. Currently, Viswanathan is identifying and characterizing the contributions made to the electroretinogram (ERG) by the different retinal cell types. Results of the studies will increase understanding of the sites and mechanisms of disease actions in patients with ocular disorders like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular disorder.
