A recent $1.6 million grant awarded to the IU School of Dentistry (IUSD) by 21st Century Funds will help researchers learn how to detect and treat tooth decay before it becomes a cavity and identify skin cancer in its early stages. Researchers at IUSD hop
e to perfect QLF or Quantitative Light Fluorescence, a non-invasive technology that uses changes in the optical properties of teeth to spot early tooth decay before the dentist can see it with a visual examination or on a radiograph.

The IU School of Medicine (IUSM) won additional research funding of $1.9 million, which establishes the Indiana Center of Excellence in Biomedical Imaging. Gary Hutchins, the John W. Beeler Professor of radiology, is the principal investigator. The center
will focus on development and application of biomedical imaging techniques for the non-invasive study of cellular and molecular processes. IUSM is a partner in another venture submitted by FluorRx, Inc., which was funded for $1.69 million.
The project is entitled “Critical Care Analyzer Based on Fluorescence Lifetime Technology” and involves patented technology that will provide better management of critical care patients by enabling more timely measurement of blood gases, electrolytes and
cardiac markers using whole blood samples in a simple, easy-to-use instrument.
