González began his tenure as the eighth dean of the School of Education July 1 and succeeds retiring University Dean Donald Warren. González also holds an appointment as professor of educational leadership and policy studies in the school.
In addition to serving as interim dean of the College of Education at the University of Florida, González had been associate dean for administration and finance, and chair of the Department of Counselor Education.
While at Florida, González also served as chair of the University Senate Nominating Committee, chair of the University Council on Teacher Education, and co-chair of the University Greek Task Force. In 1990, he was president of the Association of Hispanic
Faculty.
He is known in higher education circles as the founder and president of Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students (BACCHUS), the nation’s largest collegiate organization for the prevention of alcohol abuse. Founded in 1975,
the alcohol awareness organization is now known as the BACCHUS and GAMMA (Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol) Peer Education Network, and the organization addresses a variety of student health and safety issues.
González received a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a doctorate in counselor education from the University of Florida.
Among his goals: increasing the already substantive program of doctoral education and research, enhancing the school’s leadership in use of technology, and adding to the diversity of faculty and students.
