Indiana University’s efforts to become a national leader in integrating distributed education into the mainstream of teaching and learning will be guided by the Strategic Plan for Distributed Education: Charting a Course toward an Indiana Virtual Universi
ty.
The strategic plan includes seven general recommendations and 35 proposed actions that focus on innovations in information technology for distributed learning, greater access to IU educational resources, and increased participation in lifelong learning in
Indiana and beyond. “The plan,” explained Erwin Boschmann, IU associate vice president for distributed education, “is firmly grounded on sound pedagogy, which will be our constant guide.”
The plan is the result of an intensive planning process involving input from faculty and staff statewide, as well input from the broader university community. It represents the distillate thinking of the academic leadership regarding teaching and learning
in a modern information technology environment.
“Technology is transforming ways of teaching and learning, both inside and outside the classroom,” said Blaise Cronin, dean of the School of Library and Information Science. Cronin and Dr. Stephen Jay, who is on the faculty of the IU School of Medicine, c
o-chaired the Planning Advisory Committee that helped prepare the plan, “Business as usual simply won’t do.”
The Strategic Plan for Distributed Education, Jay added, provides a framework for moving ahead. “The plan addresses the nexus of technological, social, pedagogic and institutional issues associated with developing a sustainable distributed education capab
ility at IU.”
Throughout the coming months, the Office of Distributed Education will be presenting the Strategic Plan for Distributed Education to university colleagues statewide via the World Wide Web, one-on-one meetings, and various electronic and printed publicatio
ns.
Printed copies of the plan are also available. To receive a copy, send an
E-mail request to deplan@iupui.edu. The office is also soliciting comments about the Strategic Plan for Distributed Education. Specifically, the office invites suggestions about which elements of the plan should be given top priority once implementation b
egins.
The office also encourages ideas about how faculty and staff can best work together to carry out the plan’s action items. Send discussion points to the Office of Distributed Education at deplan@iupui.edu, making specific references to the initiatives, rec
ommendations and action items.
The plan is now available on line. To view it, go to:
