| Amended
smoking policy at IUB took effect Sept. 1
Smoking on the IU Bloomington campus is prohibited within
30 feet of buildings.

IUB Chancellor Sharon Brehm has approved an amendment
to the campus smoking policy that was presented by a task
force of students, faculty, staff and administrators.
The amendment took effect Sept. 1.
All building doorways and fully or partially enclosed
walkways connecting buildings are to be smoke-free, along
with areas near open windows and ventilation systems.
Smoking is prohibited on university owned or leased property
within 30 feet of building entrances, exits, partially
or fully enclosed walkways, open windows and ventilation
systems.
“We’ll phase in the policy during the next
two months. I want to make this transition as smooth as
possible for smokers and non-smokers,” said Brehm.
“We want to align with the ordinances recently passed
by the City of Bloomington and Monroe County, and create
a healthier environment on campus.”
The two-month transition period will allow students, staff
and faculty members to become more familiar with the policy
and will permit time for preparation of appropriate signage
for buildings and other necessary changes. Buildings and
vehicles owned or leased by the university have been smoke-free
since November 1993. |
