Registration for the 12th annual Teaching Research Ethics (TRE) Workshop, sponsored by IU’s Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions, is now being accepted.
The widely praised workshop is scheduled for May 12-14 at the Indiana Memorial Union on the IU Bloomington campus. The annual event has gained an international reputation for excellence, attracting 3,428 participants from 40 states, the District of Columbia, and nine foreign countries, and representing 141 universities and other institutions in its first 11 years.
While the need for explicit training in research ethics for scientists continues to be recognized, mentoring and modeling ethical behavior are no longer considered sufficient strategies:
• Several federal agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, now require training in the responsible conduct of research as part of their National Research Service Awards training grants.
• Many science faculty want to include research ethics in their curricula, but their training is in science, not in teaching ethics. TRE can provide the necessary training and additional resources, with the potential for significant impacts. Faculty participating in the workshop will be able to design syllabi or course units integrating substantive issues in research ethics and will gain competence and confidence in teaching research ethics.
