Jean Harper, English, has won a Mid-List Press Series
Award for Creative Nonfiction for her book manuscript Greenhouse:
A Memoir.
The book recounts her experiences working in the rose growing industry in Richmond, Ind. for a period of time in 1992. An important part of her experience was moving from a fairly privileged lifestyle in the East to being a member of a crew of blue-collar workers in a rose-growing greenhouse in the Midwest.
Many of the laborers with whom she worked were illiterate and
were one paycheck away from poverty. The story also explores her
feelings on moving from the east to the Midwest. Her work has
appeared in The Iowa Review, Cimarron Review, Living Forge
Journal and elsewhere.
Since 1990, Mid-List Press has sponsored the First Series Award for the Novel for writers who have yet to publish a novel, and in 1995, the First Series was expanded to include awards for book-length collections of short fiction and creative nonfiction.
