| Roberts |
This summer, George Roberts, professor emeritus of political
science, received the Sagamore of the Wabash designation from Indiana
Gov. Joe Kernan. Roberts is well-known regionally for his skills
in the classroom and his abilities as an observer of the political
scene. State Rep. Bob Kuzman (D-Crown Point) presented the award.
Roberts is the author of Paul M. Butler: Hoosier Politician
and National Political Leader and has written about Indiana
political parties, the 1964 presidential election in the Southwest
and the U.S. Bill of Rights. He also has edited the proceedings
of the Indiana Academy of Social Science since 1982 and is a member
of the Center for the Study of the Presidency. The Sagamore, created
during the term of Gov. Ralph Gates in the 1940s, is the highest
award that can be bestowed by the governor of Indiana.

| Needleman |
Ruth Needleman, founder of Swingshift College, discussed
the program at the World Forum on Education, meeting in Brazil
this summer. Activities supported by the Center for Cultural Discovery
and Learning also led to a week-long trip to Cuba where Needleman
was a guest of the Federation of Trade Unions in Light Industry
and learned about the country’s work conditions, wages and unions.
