Roberts
This summer, George Roberts, professor emeritus of political science, received the Sagamore of the Wabash designation from Indiana Gov. Joe Kernan. Roberts is well-known regionally for his skills in the classroom and his abilities as an observer of the political scene. State Rep. Bob Kuzman (D-Crown Point) presented the award.

Roberts is the author of Paul M. Butler: Hoosier Politician and National Political Leader and has written about Indiana political parties, the 1964 presidential election in the Southwest and the U.S. Bill of Rights. He also has edited the proceedings of the Indiana Academy of Social Science since 1982 and is a member of the Center for the Study of the Presidency. The Sagamore, created during the term of Gov. Ralph Gates in the 1940s, is the highest award that can be bestowed by the governor of Indiana.

Needleman

Ruth Needleman, founder of Swingshift College, discussed the program at the World Forum on Education, meeting in Brazil this summer. Activities supported by the Center for Cultural Discovery and Learning also led to a week-long trip to Cuba where Needleman was a guest of the Federation of Trade Unions in Light Industry and learned about the country’s work conditions, wages and unions.
