Herron arti-facts

• Herron joined IUPUI in 1969.

• Some of Indiana’s most famous artists taught classes at the John Herron Art Institute when it first opened in 1902, including T.C. Steele, J. Ottis Adams, Rudolph Schwartz, William Forsyth, Otto Stark and Richard Gruelle.

• Many notable alumni have graduated from Herron, including master printmaker Garo Z. Antreasian; illustrators Bill Peet and Bill Justice; author and illustrator Norman Bridwell; and sculptor Dan Edwards.

• Herron’s “Saturday School,” now in its 80th year, offers recreational classes to the community. Some former students include Ruth Lilly and Walter Blackburn.

• Currently, the Herron School of Art has 700 students from 13 different countries. The school has an alumni population of more than 2,125.

• The Art Association of Indianapolis founded the Herron School of Art in 1885, upon the receipt of investor John Herron’s estate. The $200,000 bequest called for the establishment of an art institute for the promotion of art and culture in the city.

• In 1970, the school’s art collection grew so immensely, it was moved to West 38th Street and Michigan Road to form the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
