Student housing opens at IUPUI
By Diane Brown
The first two buildings of a new $40 million student housing complex on the IUPUI campus opened to students in August, in time for the start of the new school year.

The buildings will house 137 students in fully furnished one-, two- and four-bedroom apartments. The remaining seven buildings in the complex are scheduled to open for spring semester, providing a total of 333 apartments for students on the urban campus.

Located a stone’s throw from the pedestrian walk north of the White River State Park, the new IUPUI buildings provide apartment-style living for students in housing convenient to campus and downtown Indianapolis.

“This new residential complex will allow IUPUI to better serve our students by providing a comfortable home-away from home,” said Hayward Guenard, director of the Office of Housing and Residence Life.

Each apartment is equipped with high-speed Internet access, a washer and dryer, a microwave and dishwasher. All building entrances will require electronic cards for access.

In addition to providing more on-campus housing in response to students’ requests, the complex is an extension of the educational experience that begins in IUPUI classrooms.

“By providing residential-based learning communities and residential programming that are grounded in the IUPUI principles of undergraduate learning, the new complex will offer opportunities in keeping with the quality education available at IUPUI,” Guenard said.

Located on the far west edge of the campus, the complex sits on a wedge of land bounded by Limestone Avenue on the east, Michigan Street on the north and Porto Allegre Drive on the west. The limestone and brick structures were designed by Ratio Architects of Indianapolis.

Rental rates run from $495 for each student in a four-bedroom apartment, to $695 for a student living alone in a one-bedroom apartment. One-bedroom apartments offer 500 square feet of living space and one bathroom, while the four-bedroom apartments have 1,225 square feet of space and two baths.
