MTV celebrities and local radio personalities helped IUPUI kick
off the 2003-04 school year in style as part of the annual “Weeks
of Welcome”—nicknamed WOW—festival that greeted new and returning
students.
Two weeks of activities, ranging from a visit with cast members Steven Hill and Ruthie Alcaide from MTV’s Real World, to a free food festival, to a campus carnival highlighted the WOW-fest.
WOW was offered by Campus and Community Life, formerly the Office of Student Life and Diversity, to illustrate the variety of activities available to IUPUI students.
“We wanted to welcome new and returning IUPUI students to campus in an exciting, memorable way,” said Frank Ross, associate director of campus and community life. Weeks of Welcome provides students a taste of the dynamic student activities that exist on the IUPUI campus.”
Carnival in the Courtyard featured live music from Extra Blue Kind and AM Drive, plus activities like bungee runs, boxing, NASCAR remote-control racing and Bonzi bikes.
The IUPUI Tastes Indy event gave students, staff and faculty the opportunity to taste cuisine from some of Indianapolis’ best-known ethnic restaurants.
Other events included a spirit rally, a career and internship fair, an activities fair, an outdoor movie night, an ice cream social and a “welcome to campus” student convocation. Events exposed students—both new and returning—to the clubs, programs and organizations that challenge them academically, socially and in service to the community outside the classroom.
Campus and Community Life promotes student engagement on campus and within the Indianapolis community, including more than 140 student organizations, weekly leadership development programs, cultural enrichment, and a wide range of campus and community events.
