Next month, the IU Ballet Theater in Bloomington will usher in the holidays with its annual performance of The Nutcracker. Whirling snowflakes, dangerous battles and delicate sugar plums, plus new costumes and choreography, will be part of the magic of Peter Tchaikovsky’s classic.
This year, the American Ballet Theatre will be sending two of its leading principal dancers to perform the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier. Angel Corella, who played the Cavalier in the Bloomington production last year, will return to that role, and Xiomara Reyes will be making her debut with the IU Ballet Theater as the Sugar Plum Fairy. The two stars will perform during the Dec. 5-6 evening performances, which both begin at 8 p.m. at the Musical Arts Center.
Matinee performances, featuring IU Ballet Theater dancers in the roles of Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier, will begin at 3 p.m. Dec. 6-7. (IU’s spring ballet, March 26-27, will be a Homage to Tchaikovsky.)
