| IU Kokomo has received approval from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (HEC) to offer a new degree to enhance knowledge of aging and improve credentials for executive, administrative and managerial positions in industries closely associated with services to the elderly.
A bachelor of arts degree program in health and aging, the first new degree program to be approved by the HEC for the campus in a decade, will be available next fall.
“This degree provides multidisciplinary perspectives of gerontology-related issues from nursing, psychology, humanities, business, public affairs and sociology,” said Stuart Green, vice chancellor of academic affairs. “Emphasizing a broad knowledge of gerontology with experiential learning in the field, this program will prepare graduates to fill critical administrative positions in the region’s growing aging-related service industry.” According to a recent report on the state of the workforce in north central Indiana, since 1990 there has been a marked increase in the number of residents 55 years and older. This group now comprises 24 percent of the population in the area, which is higher than the statewide and national averages of 21 percent.
A rapid growth in services for the elderly has accompanied this increase of older residents. Assisted living facilities, nursing homes, adult day care, and government and social service agencies will require executives and program administrators who are good managers and who are also knowledgeable about and sensitive to the conditions and needs of the elderly.
