| A three-year process that would bring convenient and affordable health-care services to the IPFW community came to a close when the IPFW/Parkview Health and Wellness Center opened in January. According to James E. Jones, professor and dean of the School of Health Sciences, faculty and staff of the IPFW Department of Nursing conducted feasibility studies over three years that would pave the way for the establishment of the clinic. In addition, they held meetings to determine the best way to accomplish the project, and their findings were presented to administrators who negotiated with Parkview for an on-site clinic. Located in Walb Student Union, Room 234, the fee-for-services clinic is staffed by Karen Salser and Cheryl Ericson, certified nurse practitioners; Rhonda Scher, certified medical assistant; and Judy Tillapaugh, wellness/fitness coordinator. The clinic’s mission is to provide quality health services and to improve the health and wellness of students, staff and the community, operating like an urgent-care facility. Nurse practitioners diagnose and treat minor acute health problems and stable chronic conditions. They perform physical exams and can provide services including suturing, asthma treatment, injections, vaccinations, depression diagnosis, and the treatment of colds, sinus infections and more. The clinic serves IPFW staff, faculty, students, retirees and their family members. In addition, anyone visiting campus for an event or meeting may use the clinic. Fees for the clinic are comparable to similar family practices. A routine visit is $41, and a new patient will pay $49 for the first visit. In addition to providing health services, nurse practitioners promote healthy living through patient education and counseling as well as creating personalized programs to meet patients’ needs.
Tillapaugh is available for personal health and wellness consultation, especially for those interested in learning about fitness plans and healthy eating guidelines. In addition, there is a resource room in the clinic where patients can read books, watch videos and utilize interactive computer programs.
The IPFW/Parkview Health and Wellness Clinic is open Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon.
