George Kuh, professor of education, IUB

Kuh

George Kuh, professor of education at IU Bloomington, has received the year 2000 Award for Research Achievement from the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). Kuh received the honor at the ASHE annual conference in Sacramento, Calif., Nov. 17.

He was cited for his body of work on the nature of collegiate environments and the conditions of effective student learning. His work has helped broaden the way educators think about the environmental requirements for student learning and has been significant in shaping the ideas and the work of his colleagues in student affairs.

Kuh is especially well known for two books: the 1988 ASHE-ERIC report, The Invisible Tapestry: Culture in America’s Colleges and Universities and, in 1991, Involving Colleges.

More recently, Kuh has become director of the College Student Experiences research and director of the new National Survey of Student Engagement.
