A quarter century ago, the working title of the film-of-the-moment was Bambino, but the screenplay about a town/gown Little 500 rivalry, written by IU alumnus Steve Tesich, went to the silver screen as Breaking Away. Shot in Bloomington, the work won an Academy Award nomination for best picture in 1979 and garnered an Oscar for best original screenplay. The movie, as the current Kinsey (the subject of today’s feature), was shown ahead of its general distribution release at the IU Auditorium (above); its stellar cast included Dennis Quaid, Barbara Barrie and Paul Dooley. IU President Herman B Wells was depicted by character actor Oliver Platt in Kinsey, while then IU President John Ryan played himself in Breaking Away.
