‘How does IU bring value to the state?’

By Susan Williams

IU’s first president, Andrew Wylie, asked a question in his inauguration: “Of what advantage is a college to the community?”

In times that are increasingly challenging on a number of fronts, past IU President Myles Brand and Interim President Gerald Bepko ask essentially the same question in The President’s Report 2001-02: “How does IU bring value to the state?”

And they answer it as well in the report which is now available online. Indiana University educates the state’s professionals and pursues the endless frontier; it partners to build a new economy and build global connections; and IU creates cultural capital and contributes to local communities.

While all associated with IU as faculty and staff are undeniably happy when payday rolls around, it’s not a bad thing to be reminded of the extended value of workplace contributions. You’ll find affirmation of those in this look at a year in the life of a public university.
