Assessing the justness of war
In a Bloomington classroom, students draw
upon Judeo-Christian, Islamic and secular ethics to assess world conflict:
Hiroshima, the Nuremburg Trials, Kosovo, Sept. 11, Iraq. Just war
tradition, harkening back to the 5th-century writings of Augustine,
evolves in response to these experiences. Cultural memory—how we see
ourselves as a people and as a nation—depends on that evolution.
