IUSON’s Champion an oncological ‘Pathfinder’

Champion

IU School of Nursing (IUSON) researcher Victoria Champion has received the National Institute of Nursing Research Pathfinder Award for pioneering work in behavioral oncology research.

She received the award earlier this month at the institute’s NightinGala celebration in Washington, D.C. The development of interventions leading to the discovery and diagnosis of cancer at earlier and more curable stages has been the focus of two decades of research from the IUPUI campus of IUSON.

Among many studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), her research has identified predictors of breast cancer screening behaviors and developed a series of tailored interventions that can be delivered through health-care systems in a cost-effective manner. She also has collaborated with faculty from Duke University in genetic risk assessment, using interactive computer technology for nurses or patients. In 1998, she founded the Behavioral Cooperative Oncology Group, a multi-disciplinary and multi-site network of researchers supported by the Walther Cancer Institute. Worldwide, oncology nurses now use Champion’s findings for development of their own research programs and for clinical practice.

Recently, she was appointed to the breast and cervical cancer committee of the Centers for Disease Control, and serves on national committees for the American Cancer Society, the NIH and other organizations. She is the director of the Mary Margaret Walther Cancer Care Program; the director of the IU Center for Excellence in Women’s Health; and associate director of cancer control at the IU Cancer Center, all based at IUPUI.
