The 'forgotten war'
The Korean Conflict of the 1950s is often referred to as America's forgotten war, but students in Diane Reid's speech communication class at IU Southeast are making sure the memories of those veterans aren't forgotten. While studying oral interpretation skills, the students have conducted oral history interviews with veterans from the Floyd County area that will be a part of a Veterans Day commemoration featuring a readers' theater performance.

'Conversations on Race' at IU South Bend
IU South Bend's award-winning community/campus "Conversations on Race" is scheduled next weekend on the South Bend campus and will feature U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), who once served at the side of Martin Luther King Jr. as a civil rights activist. Among participants will be students and faculty involved in the campus' new Civil Rights Heritage Center.

New nature preserve at IUB to foster research, environmental education
IU biologist Keith Clay has been named director of a new nature preserve near Bloomington. The IU trustees approved plans for the preserve in May and administration of the 450-plus acres will begin in January.

Walda named to federal relations post
John Walda has been named executive director of federal relations for IU. A member of the IU Board of Trustees since 1990, he will resign his tenure by the end of the year to begin his new post in January.

Herron School of Art instructor Geoffrey Bowen (left) and student Kayce Colstad did a wheel-throwing demo at the Indianapolis Artsgarden prior to the second annual Empty Bowls supper at North Central High School Oct. 16. Herron students made and donated 500 ceramic bowls for the event, which raised more than $4,000 for the Children's Bureau of Indianapolis. Meanwhile, the school continues its first public fund-raising campaign in its 99 years of existence; in the last 18 months, the school has raised more than $7 million toward a goal of $10 million needed for relocation to the IUPUI campus.
