The Office of First Year Experience Programs is pleased to announce that the New Student Orientation session “For Students Only – Welcome to College” has been awarded the Commission on Personal Safety’s 2009 Leadership in Personal Safety award in recognition of the office’s commitment to personal and campus safety.

For Students Only

“For Students Only” is a session that helps new Hoosiers consider some of the more personal issues and decisions students face as they adjust to life among thousands of peers, choices and responsibilities. Specifically, it addresses safety and sexual assault, decisions and consequences concerning alcohol use, and issues of diversity and community. The current version of the session, called “Welcome to College” was developed in 2008 as a musical performed by student actors. The original score and script was written by an Indiana University student, Mike Raunick, who also directed the performances during New Student Orientation.

The Commission on Personal Safety, and the Office for Women’s Affairs and Dean of Students Office has been in partnership with the FYE Office (formerly the Office of Orientation Programs) in the support of “For Students Only” for several years. Previous to “Welcome to College” the session offered Interactive Theatre, presenting scenarios and interacting with the student audience while still in character. “Welcome to College” was developed to offer a relevant, entertaining way to present some of these tougher issues. The session was extremely highly rated by students throughout the entire 2008 Summer New Student Orientation program, with clear evidence of lasting knowledge and awareness as students returned to campus for the academic year.

FYE staff would like to send a specifically offer special recognition to the students who performed “For Students Only -- Welcome to College”, a grateful “thank you” to the IU students, administrators and faculty who offered insight, advice and feedback throughout the development, and appreciation to CPS and OWA partnering with FYE/Orientation in supporting the performances. A very special thank you to Mike Raunick and to IU staff members Megan Ray, Debbie Melloan and Carol McCord who worked so closely with the development of the sessions.

The award was presented at the annual CPS Awards Ceremony by Dean Richard McKaig and Dean Yvette Alex-Assensoh, who serve as Co-Chairs of the CPS.

The Office of Scholarships wins Higher Education Marketing Report’s Annual Admissions Advertising Awards

February 25, 2009.
The Office of Scholarships participated in the Higher Education Marketing Report’s Annual Admissions Advertising Awards competition, the largest educational advertising awards competition in the country. Over two thousand entries were received from more than one-thousand colleges, universities and secondary schools from all fifty states and several foreign countries. The Office of Scholarships submitted entries in four different categories with our “Congratulations!” newspaper series, our Billboard design, our “You’ve Earned Your Stripes Campaign” and our “Scholars Reception” print pieces.

Competition was fierce, but I am proud to say that we won the Gold award in two separate categories for our “Stripes” Campaign and our “Scholars Reception” print pieces! We will be receiving two framed plaques in recognition of our awards.

Congratulations to Stephanie Dowdy-Nava who created the Scholar Reception pieces which won a Gold Award! In addition to creating a stunning and impressive look for our Scholar Receptions, Stephanie drew the arbutus flowers – the official IU flower - by hand. Stephanie is an excellent artist and we are certainly reaping the benefits of her talents! Sample print pieces from the Scholar Receptions are below. The Bloomington event was a pilot last spring and was extremely successful, with the yield rate of attendees far exceeding the average. Eight regional events are happening this spring for scholars.

Congratulations as well to the entire Scholarship team (Ron, Stephanie, Abby & Caryn) and Gene Harrawood for their work on the ‘Stripes’ campaign, which also won a Gold award. This was truly a team effort and many members of the OEM admin area contributed to this success – thank you! New photos continue to be added to the ‘Show Us Your Stripes’ feature if you want to check it out: www.scholarships.indiana.edu/stripes.
