Airlines serving Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) are DELTA/KLM, UNITED/Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airlines, and Turkish Airlines.
STEP:Tanzania is currently not on the US State Department Travel Alert or Travel Warning List. All students are required to enroll in the US Department of State’s STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) prior to their travel, in case of emergency situations.
AMREF: All students are required to subscribe for membership in AMREF before leaving home. This is NOT included in the field costs. The membership is $16/month for a package that includes 2 air ambulance evacuations.
Immunizations: The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide recommendations for travel to Tanzania. Consult your doctor to determine your immunization updates, discuss malaria prophylactics and other necessary prescriptions.
After you are accepted into the course you will receive a course packet containing information on safety and security issues, health and emergency preparedness, immunization, travel (e.g., visa, flight and bookings to Kilimanjaro International Airport, ground transportation), local currency, food (ethnic and international), living in the field camp, clothing and field gear etc. Local contact information in Tanzania and emergency contact information are also provided.
Kilimanjaro International Airport "JRO" is the airport serving the town of Arusha in northern Tanzania. Flights from North America to Tanzania will have a short layover in Europe (Amsterdam/ Heathrow/ Istanbul/ Paris etc.) and/or Africa (Addis Ababa, Nairobi or Dar Es Salaam).
Upon arrival in Kilimanjaro, course instructors will pick you up from the airport and take you to Naura Springs Hotel in Arusha (a one-hour trip) where the field school begins.
