P200 Home Page | Syllabus | Reading schedule| Lecture Notes | Assignments Essay 5: Emergence of complexity
This is an essay that requires you to read parts of the Images text that we did not discuss in class. You can select chapters of particular interest to you.
Your textbook reviews a number of examples of sites that archaeoloigst have studied to understand how hierarchical socio-economic-political organizations, such as chiefdoms or states, developed in different parts of the world. While general trends toward socio-political complextiy are evident in many parts of the world, the specific contexts, sequences and rates of transition vary. Compare the types and patterns of evidence archaeologists have found and how they have been interpreted to document the developments in TWO independent geographical regions (of your choice).
such as:
- the Near East vs Mexico
- the Maya lowlands vs Highland South America
