The Indiana State Science StandardsDepartment of Education Format
The Indiana Department of Education provides files of all of the State Standards, for each grade. To facilitate identification of Standards for English, Math, Science, etc., each area is presented separately. Every teacher should have a copy of the Standards for the grade level at which they teach.
Alternate Format
In this alternate format, the Standards are presented in a table, for which each column is one "strand" of the overall Standards. In addition, we have also indicated where particular Mathematics, English, or Health Standards mesh with the Science Standards. This is intended to make the inter-disciplinary links more evident, and illustrate how Science is not a separate discipline, but has very strong dependence on these other fields. In these tables, we have highlighted in yellow the column headings for each grade level. The Science Standards are in black. English Standards are in green, and are preceded by the letter E. Mathematics Standards are in blue, and are preceded by the letter M. Health Standards are in pink, and are preceded by the letter H. For some grades, a number of English Standards apply to all of the Science strands, and are therefore listed at the top of each column for that grade. Because none of us teaches in a vacuum, we have broken the presentation into separate files that cover two grade levels. This is intended to help illustrate how each year's learning builds on the prior years. Each of us should have an understanding of the knowledge that our students are expected to retain for the year after the one we teach. It is also helpful to know what our students should have learned in the prior year, so that we can build on it more easily, and avoid unnecessary duplication.
